It's Never Too Late: Mary J Blige Declares Howard University is her #1 Choice

So I am sure by now many of you have heard that multi platinum artist, Mary J Blige has announced that she is going to attend Howard University this upcoming school year.

Well I must say, I am not suprised that this Fabulous Brown Girl wants to join the scholarly ranks as many notable blacks have already done by obtaining a degree from Howard University!

She did meet Sean Combs aka Diddy shortly after he left Howard and joined Uptown Records!

Mary J is not afraid and knows it is never too late to gain a formal education. If this is something that she wants then we commend Ms. Mary for wanting to continue her education at one of the best institutions of higher learning on the planet ;-)

Here is Mary making her announcement on Good Morning America.

However, even though Mary J made her announcement, Howard University recently released a statement about Mary future educational plans. It seems like Howard has not officially accepted her, and if she is serious about entering as a traditional student, they are willing to help her with a successful application process.

'Without question, Ms. Mary J. Blige's resilience and dedication to her craft are largely unmatched. Howard University congratulates Ms. Blige on the recent completion of her high school requirements. We encourage Ms. Blige to continue her studies and welcome her consideration of Howard University in the future. We are happy to work with Ms. Blige on completing the formal process for admission.'

Well let's hope her application process goes a little smoother than many of ours did!

Regardless if Mary J Blige attends Howard University or not, we salute our fellow FBG for recognizing my alma mater as her top choice and wanting to further her education with a college degree!

She is setting the example that even though she may have all the success she could have ever dreamed of with her signing career, none of it has fulfilled her thirst for knowledge and receiving a formal education. I would even go as far as to say that she probably looks at Howard University students and wants to have the experience we were blessed to have-- while we look at her and dream of having her life.

Like I always say, the grass is always greener on the other side!

Note: Just want to take the time out really quickly to thank all of the FABULOUS BROWN GIRLS out there for continuing to check out the blog! Our sincerest apologies for not blogging as often as I would like! We know there are so many FABULOUS and great things happening and we will try to cover and talk about them more often.

Stay Fab!

Howard University's Student President and President Obama Support HBCU's

Last Friday, HBCU leader and student body president, Bryan Smart was given an opportunity to introduce President Obama as he signed the HBCU Initiative making more money and support from the federal government available to the institutions, beginning with the 2011 budget, according to Blackamericaweb.com.

Being a proud decendant of an HBCU education, I know and agree heavily with those who care about making HBCUs strong and able to withstand and breed a new generation of educated and confident young black Americans.

“This will establish a new platform for strengthening the capacity of HBCUs.” said John S. Wilson, executive director of the White House Initiative on HBCUs. “This executive order provides $98 million in new money for HBCUs,” Wilson said. And the nearly $400 million in increased funds for Pell Grants is expected to find its way to students at HBCUs, said Wilson

According to the Hilltop Online, HUSA President Bryan Smart had this to say about my Alma Mater, “Howard has given me a sense of self,” he said. “It has given me an educational experience that is second to none, and opportunities like this one that I know I wouldn’t have been afforded at any other university.”

Howard University Student President, Bryan Smart

For Obama to recognize the importance of HBCUs is wonderful and another reason why we at FABULOUS BROWN GIRL love the President of the United States.

Last night the 41st NAACP Image Awards took place to celebrate and reward the accomplishments of people who the organization believes have successfully advanced people of color.

Visualize Your Dreams and Never Give Up On Them!

I just want to share something that has been on my mind with all of you Fabulous Brown Girls. It is something you hear so many times, that you sometimes become numb to it . The adage
NEVER GIVE UP ON YOUR DREAMS!

Yes, I know it is said all the time, but I just feel like I should reiterate it because it is the plain and simple TRUTH!

I have seen many of my friends and family reach goals that were merely ideas years ago! A lot of us now have our degrees, are obtaining masters and PhD's, are in medical schools, law schools, working for various Fortune 500 companies, launching our own businesses, and buying homes and real estate! All because we had a VISION for our lives and set goals to reach them!

I am a HUGE proponent of writing down your goals and making them HIGHLY visual. An example of this is through a vision board, which is simply a poster that has visual images and phrases of the goals you wish to obtain. Because I am a PowerPoint connoisseur I made a PowerPoint slide show as my vision board instead of a poster board when I came up with the idea of FABULOUS BROWN GIRL, and when I recently looked back over it not too long ago, I can honestly say, and i mean HONESTLY, that all of the goals surrounding my blog FBG have been met or are currently underway!!

I had an idea that came to my mind, which then turned into a goal, as well as a passion. I took the time to craft out specific details about this goal and made a visually appealing map of sorts to look at and remind myself of where I want to be and how I want to get there! I definitely intend on doing the same thing for the other passions and future goals that I have in my life!

Don't let anyone deter you or tell you when and how your goal needs to happen because everyone is different and what they may not have the ability to do, you may very well be able to succeed at the highest level.

So Fabulous Brown Girls, whatever your passion is, what ever you see your self in a certain amount of time doing.. write it down and visualize the process it will take to get there and don't neglect to ask for help or a mentor (which I strongly believe all of us should have at least one at this stage) Don't let go of your dream and I promise you will be FABULOUS!

Highest Paid College President is a Black Woman

Shirley Ann Jackson, was named the highest paid college president earning $1.6 million according to the survey done by the Chronicle of Higher Education. She is the President of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy N.Y. Jackson is among 23 other college presidents who earn over a million dollars.

Jackson is the first woman, and not to mention African American to serve as President of the institution of higher learning.

Not only is Washington, DC native, Jackson, the first African American president of her college she was also the first African American woman to recieve her PhD in Physics from the prestigious MIT.

Jackson is definitely "walking" Black History and Fabulous BROWN Girl congratulates her for breaking boundaries and being true to herself and her passions. She is a perfect example for young African American women who see those same boundaries Jackson did! You can break boundaries and you can shatter records! You can do anything that your heart desires!

That is what FABULOUS BROWN GIRL is all about! Telling yourself you can accomplish anythng that you want to in life and actually believing and seeing it come to reality.

When you do what you love the money will come! Jackson is a perfect example that the rewards for being a FABULOUS BROWN GIRL and following your passions are 7 figure sweet!

Education is Power, isn't it?

President Barack Obama gave a wonderful speech yesterday addressing grade school children to work hard in school so they can be successful in life. For the life of me I can not understand why they (conservatives) were so up in arms about OUR PRESIDENT encouraging children (who are our future) to work hard and stay in school so that they can be successful. Can some one please break it down to me what was so wrong with this ?! Some right wing school districts around the country even went as far as refusing to show the President's speech because they felt like he was trying to push his political agenda to grade school students? REALLY?!?! It really saddens me that people try to tarnish President Obama's legacy anyway they can.

Here at Fabulous Brown Girl we believe that children can not be encouraged enough that their education is important! EDUCATION IS KEY!!

"The truth is, being successful is hard. You won't love every subject you study. You won't click with every teacher. Not every homework assignment will seem completely relevant to your life right this minute. And you won't necessarily succeed at everything the first time you try," Obama said.

Being the father of grade school children himself, he said what any responisble parent would tell their child.

If you haven't had a chance to see the President Obama Speech, please take time to listen to him.. Inspirational as always!!
