Howard University's Student President and President Obama Support HBCU's

Last Friday, HBCU leader and student body president, Bryan Smart was given an opportunity to introduce President Obama as he signed the HBCU Initiative making more money and support from the federal government available to the institutions, beginning with the 2011 budget, according to Blackamericaweb.com.

Being a proud decendant of an HBCU education, I know and agree heavily with those who care about making HBCUs strong and able to withstand and breed a new generation of educated and confident young black Americans.

“This will establish a new platform for strengthening the capacity of HBCUs.” said John S. Wilson, executive director of the White House Initiative on HBCUs. “This executive order provides $98 million in new money for HBCUs,” Wilson said. And the nearly $400 million in increased funds for Pell Grants is expected to find its way to students at HBCUs, said Wilson

According to the Hilltop Online, HUSA President Bryan Smart had this to say about my Alma Mater, “Howard has given me a sense of self,” he said. “It has given me an educational experience that is second to none, and opportunities like this one that I know I wouldn’t have been afforded at any other university.”

For Obama to recognize the importance of HBCUs is wonderful and another reason why we at FABULOUS BROWN GIRL love the President of the United States.

Last night the 41st NAACP Image Awards took place to celebrate and reward the accomplishments of people who the organization believes have successfully advanced people of color.

We love anything that celebrates us as a people, puts us in a positive light, and of course gives us a reason to dress up and look FABULOUS as well as support one another.

WE ARE the WORLD 25

First off, I apologize for the lapse of posts. I am definitely sure you all can relate to a time when life starts to get real and everything comes at you at the same time. It is not a bad thing, but Life is starting to make the moves that I have been waiting for and I can barely keep up, so please forgive me if I do not post as frequently as I normally do. But don't worry! I am committed to this blog and can't stay away from you Fabulous Brown Girls for too long!!! You ladies are always on my mind!

Over the weekend, the video and release for the "WE ARE THE WORLD 25" was released. Even though critics are giving the remake mixed reviews. I found it to be refreshing to see more artists than I could keep up with on this song. It warmed my heart just hearing the song because it is one of my favorites, but seeing everyone from Jennifer Hudson, to PINK, and even Tony Bennett contribute was awesome!

If you didn't get a chance to see the video, please check it out below. I think the KING of POP would be PROUD!!

In Case You Were Wondering: Who Dat!!

Today is the day us NFL fans have been waiting for!! The Superbowl championship between the Indianapolis Colts and the New Orleans Saints is finally here and in case you were wondering who FABULOUS BROWN GIRL is rooting for... all we can say who WHO DAT?!?!

That's right, New Orleans aka Nawlins is a city that has a special place in my heart. And with their remarkable season I knew the BIG GAME was in their sights way before the playoffs . So we will be rooting for Reggie Bush, Darren Sharper, and the squad to bring home the trophy. The city and the people of NEW ORLEANS need something like this to bring back a little bit of pride that was drowned in the Hurricane. Yes, our people are resilient without a Super Bowl Championship, but it doesn't hurt to have a National Victory to help put the icing on the cake!

The Saints have heart, the players want to win just as bad as the city does, so don't be alarmed if you see me jumping up and down screaming WHO DAT!! and doing the second line up and down the street!!

I am sure my fellow Saints fans and FBGs will appreciate this video.. Check it out!!

2010 "We Are the World" Remake for Haiti

Very recently, the world famous song for unity and aid, "We Are The World" was remade 25 years later to raise for the tragedy that occurred in Haiti over two weeks ago. I would be lying if I said this wasn't isn't extremely ironic that that the 25th anniversary is marked with the earthquake.

Even though it was missing some of the most popular celebrities like Beyonce', Lady Gaga, and a host of other widely popular celebs, I am still amazed and proud at how serious celebrities are taking what happened in Haiti. The philanthropy and the love they are showing is very inspiring.

Check out a few picture of some of the many celebrities giving the gift of their voice and recording the remake of that special song. I am really anticipating to hear the new version because the song still gives me chills whenever I hear it.
